The Big Picture:
$182 billion annually. Mass incarceration is an expensive epidemic, and Uzoma’s organization, Ameelio, is working to reduce the prison population, decrease recidivism, and make sure incarcerated individuals can stay in touch with the outside — through free-to-use communications apps. The goal? To allow every incarcerated person in the US to connect with their families at least once a day.
“Policy changes will take a long time. In the meantime, those trapped in our justice system will continue to suffer its inhumanity. ” — Uzoma Orchingwa, co-founder and CEO, Ameelio
