Dr. Peter Materu

Chief Program Officer, Mastercard Foundation

A former Fulbright Scholar and professor of Electrical Engineering, Peter has become an untiring and influential champion of education in Africa. He is currently is the Chief Program Officer of the Mastercard Foundation, which has commitments of over US $2.2 billion in working with more than 150 visionary organizations to increase financial inclusion and access to youth learning in Africa.

Previously, Peter had been doing remarkable work as Practice Manager for Education and Skills Development in Africa at The World Bank. It was there that he created the Africa Centers of Excellence initiative, which was the first project aimed at the capacity building of higher education institutions in Africa. Peter was also a key contributor to the establishment of the Partnership for Applied Science, Engineering and Technology (PASET) initiatives that seek to advance the quality and relevance of science and technology in higher education across the continent.

He has doctorate in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech and master’s degrees in engineering and education from the University of Manchester.
