APOPO

Cynthia D. Fast, Ph.D.

APOPO saves lives by training animals, primarily African giant rats, to work alongside medical professionals to detect disease in patients, and to root out landmines in previously war-torn regions. Their goal is to scale globally in an effort to curb disease outbreaks.

ABOUT APOPO

ABOUT

  • ISSUE AREA: Animal-Assisted Technology
  • ANNUAL OPERATING BUDGET: $7,900,000
  • GEOGRAPHY: Tanzania (w/ reach and operations in Angola, Cambodia, Ethiopia, and Mozambique)

KEY FINDINGS

  • Wants to leverage the 200,000+ followers they have between social media and newsletter subscribers to shift narratives around “HeroRATS”. To leverage this, they intend to work closely with dogs to penetrate more “western” markets. They are looking to broaden the application of this work to search-and-rescue operations, detection of municipal water leaks, secure water delivery, and auditing soil quality and pests in vulnerable areas of the region
  • Works directly with tribal communities by providing them with the tools to achieve economic sustainability
  • Their growth is largely driven by generous increases in unrestricted funding sources and earned income opportunities – primarily through research endeavors in European countries
