The Big Picture:
Twesigye founded Nyaka in 2001, in the aftermath of the HIV/AIDS crisis, which left thousands of children without one or both parents. His organization gives children a holistic support system through a network of grandmas in his community. They focus on education, healthcare, and the tools to fight gender-based violence: the care they need to thrive.

“Education breaks barriers of poverty. My father would buy one pencil and break it into five, so each of us could have a piece. Because I had a fifth of the pencil, I ended up at Columbia University.” — Twesigye Jackson Kaguri, founder, Nyaka
